300 years for ‘great asset to the town’

A YEAR of celebrations to mark the 300th anniversary of the Unitarian Meeting House, in Bury St Edmunds, was launched last Friday.

Candles representing the milestone anniversary were lit as Cllr Ian Houlder, Mayor of St Edmundsbury began the tercentenary celebrations, describing the building as ‘a great asset to the town’.

Events, including concerts, performances and exhibitions will run throughout the year to celebrate the building, which was completed in 1711.

Martin Gienke, lay minister of the Unitarian congregation, said: “We are very pleased to mount the 300th celebration of this fine building with the citizens of Bury which has become very much a community resource. We want to do the building justice with good celebrations and something that is worthy.”
