I’ve attended two town meetings about Vision 2031.

I feel I have to reply to the letter from Chris Cooke in reference to the felling of trees in Nowton Park (Bury Free press, May 11).

The council is ‘saving’ £4,500 per annum by closing the main cemetery gates on Hospital Road.

As Libby Purves, The Times columnist says in the May 14 edition, the commissioning and display of art can be overly influenced by the verbal hype that accompanies it: “Full of twisted ideas, signifying nothing.”

READERS may remember the huge national public sector protest strike of November 30 last year, against the Government’s attack on pensions, and the trade union marches and rallies in Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds on that day.

Further painful belt-tightening and maximising revenues by all councils is inevitable we are told.

Being a stammerer myself, I thought the head line of your article ‘Pupils hear inspirational story’ was right on target. Kudos to Anthony Gray for sharing his story of success and fluency with a speech therapy programme.

In response to Ian Palmer’s plea asking drivers to show restraint and be patient with learner drivers (Letters, May 4), I fear his plea will fall on deaf ears, for in the numerous decades I have been driving, I have watched standards deteriorate beyond measure, and this includes road manners, patience, courtesy, all of which add up to the general bad driving we come across daily.

MRS Sadler (Letters, April 20) highlighted her disgust at the lack of fencing in the Abbey Gardens play area. We have a similar situation in Stowmarket.

I HAVE every sympathy for those who write concerning the yellow lines and parking at Nowton Park.

After reading ‘Plan for petition against new homes’ (Bury Free Press, May 4), to say I was extremely annoyed would be an understatement.

THE NHS gets a lot of brickbats, so I thought I would write in praise of my recent treatment in the West Suffolk Hospital.

The importance of the water meadows around BurySt Edmunds has been well and truly demonstrated following the recent April ‘showers’.

Being a driving instructor is generally a pleasant and rewarding occupation and the Bury St Edmunds area lends itself perfectly to the task with its variety of road types, from rural single track roads, to a busy urban environment and a dual-carriageway bisecting the town.

A lot of coverage has been afforded to the double yellow lines being placed on the approach road to Nowton Park. It would be far better and safer for all road users if that yellow paint had been used on Station Hill, in Bury St Edmunds.

I write in support of Simon Harding (Letters, April 27). In the latest copy of the Highway Code there is a road sign called Clearway, which means no parking or stopping for a length of road.This sign is often mounted on a pole,which would mean less maintainance by the Highway department if implemented.

CONTRARY to the view expressed by a local resident (Bury Free Press, April 13), on the Jubilee trees planted on the Gainsborough Recreation Field, I see them as a future asset.

We were so pleased to hear that money would be spent on improvements at Bury St Edmunds station, so we assumed that these would all be thoughtful and in keeping with the existing layout and architecture.
