The intelligently-designed Citroen Grand C4 Picasso is the firm’s seven-seat entrant in the compact MPV sector. The standout is its ultra-spacious and extremely practical cabin, which is enhanced further by a high level of equipment and a light, airy feel.

Despite an unsettled low-speed ride, it successfully takes the stress out of family motoring. It’s a great all-rounder. Just be sure you have enough patience to learn how to use its ultra-fiddly touchscreen infotainment system which masterminds nearly every on-board control…

DRIVING

Performance
• Nearly every Grand C4 Picasso is sold with a diesel engine: we like the 118bhp 1.6-litre motor which is more than up to the job of hauling seven
• The 2.0-litre is more powerful but its power band is too narrow
• The 1.2-litre turbo petrol is surprisingly flexible

Ride and handling
• A characteristically smooth and supple ride absorbs big bumps well
• Patchy low-speed surfaces can unsettle the Citroen, and soft suspension will jostle passengers on country roads
• Despite its body roll, the Grand C4 Picasso grips well, although numb steering doesn’t inspire confidence

Refinement
• 1.6-litre diesel engines are smooth and quiet; the 2.0-litre is more rattly and gruff
• Manual gearboxes are notchy and the EAT6 automatic lurches between gearshifts
• Wind and road noise are isolated well so the Citroen cruises nicely on the motorway

IN THE CABIN

Behind the wheel
• We can’t think of an MPV with better visibility than the Grand C4 Picasso
• The driving position is sound and all but the entry-level model has an adjustable armrest
• The tricky seven-inch touchscreen is overburdened: even changing the cabin temperature requires several jabs at the screen

Space and practicality
• There’s enough space in the front even for taller drivers
• Six-footers will have no grumbles in the middle row; there are three individual and fully-adjustable seats
• Fitting adults in the third row requires a little compromise from those in the middle, but it’s fine for kids. The boot is flexible too, albeit small in seven-seat mode

Equipment
• The entry-level touch has climate control and alloy wheels, plus hands-free tailgate and aircraft-style tables on the front seat backs
• Our preferred trim is mid-range Feel, which has sat nav and rear parking sensors
• There are a bewildering numbers of packs on the extensive options list

BUYING AND OWNING

Price and running costs
• Asking prices are affordable and Citroen dealers have some sharp deals
• CO2 emissions are low and fuel economy is good, particularly the excellent-value 1.6-litre diesels
• It’s too early to get reliability data on this latest Grand C4 Picasso but, ominously, the previous model was one of the least reliable MPVs

Quality and reliability
• The smart-looking interior is appealing and classy
• Even the odd flimsy switch doesn’t hurt the semi-premium feel, lifting it above mainstream rivals

Safety and security
• Curtain airbags protect those in the front and middle seats, but not in the third row
• The smaller C4 Picasso five-seater has a decent Euro NCAP crash test score; this Grand model hasn’t been tested
• There are lots of standard safety assist features fitted as standard to Flair models; they are optional on mid-range Feel but not the base Touch

Instant verdict: Citroen’s seven-seat mid-size MPV is excellent value for money and very practical with it.
