At a glance: BMW 2 Series Coupe

This compact, two-door, four-seat coupé uses the rear-wheel-drive BMW 1 Series platform but adds a little more style. The 2 Series Coupé has few real rivals, so its broad range of petrol and diesel engines and competitive pricing have plenty of appeal.

Performance
• 2.0-litre diesel comes in 148bhp, 188bhp and 221bhp outputs
• Petrol turbos include 1.5-litre three-pot, 2.0 four in two outputs and 3.0 six
• Excellent eight-speed automatic gearbox option

Comfort
• Even sporty M235i’s surprisingly supple over bad surfaces
• Well resolved ride doesn’t need optional adaptive dampers
• M Sport’s bigger alloys better with adaptive dampers, though

Handling
• Rear-drive handling very good but set up for safety
• Pointy handling encourages spirited driving
• Steering is light and pleasingly direct

Refinement
• Four-cylinder diesels less than refined
• Vibration through pedals and gearknob
• Wind noise from around front pillars on all models

CABIN

Driving position
• Off-set pedals make you sit at slight angle
• Seat supportive and comfort, but manual adjustment is awkward
• Electric seat adjustment and adjustable lumbar support cost extra

Visibility
• Dash is simple and clearly laid out
• Thick rear pillars reduce over-the-shoulder visibility
• Standard rear sensors aid parking

Infotainment
• Easy iDrive rotary-controlled colour screen

Space and practicality

Front seats
• Plenty of space for two adults
• Decent glovebox, door pockets and central cubby

Rear seats
• Six-footers will find shortage of knee-, leg- and headroom
• Average height adults will be OK

Boot space
• 390-litre luggage area
• Deep, and respectable boot for small coupé
• Aperture is quite narrow

Buying and owning
