A new sport is set to take Suffolk by storm as a tournament paintball course opens at the Academy of Health and Fitness, in Barrow.
Imported from America, the game involves teams of five people battling to hit their opposing team with just one paint ball in a caged course.

Glen Moulds, director of sport at the centre, said: "This game is going to be absolutely massive.

"We have had a fantastic response already."

Differing from traditional paintball sessions set in woodland, tournament paintball involves negotiating 19 inflatable obstacles while trying to target rival players and capture flags.

The start of the game is signalled by a referee blowing a whistle and the final score is decided by the number of players left unmarked at the end of the game.

The new course will be based at the Japan Karate Academy, based in Church Road, Barrow.

"This is not like normal paintball," said Mr Moulds. "It is about tactics, fitness and leadership. This is a sport and it is all about precision."

Having created the academy in 2006 from a converted barn, Mr Moulds hopes to expand his centre still further with a crazy golf pitch at some time in the future.

Those interested in getting a taste of tournament paintball can visit an open day on Saturday, April 19. Entrance costs £5 for 100 balls. For more details, visit www.suffolk paintball.co.uk or call 01284 810446.
