Football: Wilkins plea – be ruthless

Richard Wilkins will urge his players to be more ruthless as they prepare for the toughest eight days of their season so far.
Bury Town FC have dazzled with their general play in recent matches but have not supported their dominance with goals.

And that problem will need to be solved if the Blues are to gain Ryman League Division One North points from three testing away games in just over a week.

The Ram Meadow-based outfit take to the road tomorrow to visit Dartford before travelling to Edgware Town on Tuesday and Tilbury on the following Saturday.

The goal-shy Blues were disappointed with a 2-2 home draw against lowly Ilford on Saturday (report on page 63) – after their play had created more than 20 chances in front of goal.

"It is very frustrating at the moment," admitted the team manager.

"I cannot fault our overall play, but we have to make the right decisions in front of goal. On Saturday, that aspect of our game was poor," Wilkins added.

There was further frustration for the Town chief when his side's midweeek home league match against Potters Bar was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

"I wanted to get the players back in action and improve their confidence in front of goal before we took to the road," said Wilkins.

"Our last outing was not the best preparation for what is ahead of us – three tough games," he added.

The Bury squad will have trained last night and at that Wilkins will again emphasise the importance of converting chances into goals.

"There are games when we will get three or four chances and we need to take them if we are going to maintain our position in the top six," said Wilkins.

"It is very tight at the top of the league and I fear those two points dropped on Saturday, may come back to haunt us," said Wilkins.

WALSHAM-le-Willows FC have released injury-plagued striker Andrew Wood after four months at Summer Road.

The striker's early-season form has been hampered due to an ankle problem and as a result, he has scored just three Ridgeons League Premier Division goals.

Team manager Paul Smith said, "I am sure, if he can avoid further problems, he will be snapped up by another club quickly. We wish him the best."

Walsham's dismal away form continued on Saturday, following a 3-0 defeat against King's Lynn Reserves.

Walsham have a two-week break before their next match – at home to Norwich United on December 1.
