Football: Home wins are vital to play-off target
RICHARD Wilkins has described his side's next two home games as massive in their bid to make the Ryman League Division One North play-offs this season.
Bury Town FC have to extend their four-match unbeaten league run to have any chance of turning their 11th place into a top five spot and have a say in the promotion race.
It looks like a tall order, but the Blues have games in hand and, if other results go their way, a further six points would put them within touching distance of their ambition.
Town welcome Maldon Town, who are just two places above them, tomorrow (ko 3pm), before Waltham Abbey are the visitors at Ram Meadow on Tuesday (ko 7.45pm).
"This is a massive week for the club. We have put a run together and now we must continue it and take full advantage of being at home," said the team manager.
"Our games against Maldon are always tightly-contested and I don't expect this to be an exception," added Wilkins.
Bury Town recorded their fourth win on the spin following a 1-0 away win against Ilford on Saturday, courtesy of Sam Reed's 17th goal of the season.
"It was a very good win. The whole team played well as a unit and that is how we need to continue," said Wilkins.
However, the Blues' team chief has one concern as he prepares his side for the task ahead – that goalscoring chances are not being put way.
"That has been happening all season and, although I will be happy with a one-goal win, we normally create enough chances to make the margin greater," said Wilkins.
"Although we have been winning, we really must start putting chances away. Leading by one goal always puts everyone else in the team under pressure."
Ryan Foster was added to the squad last week, the midfielder returning to Ram Meadow following a spell with Mildenhall Town.
Defender Sam Nunn and striker Ian Cambridge both remain a week or two away from making a return to action.
"Ryan's return, combined with the return of the two injured players, will give us further options for the run-in to the end of the season," said Wilkins.
