Football: Blues battle new pressure

RICHARD Wilkins has told his players this week that they must lift their game or be defeated.
The Bury Town FC team boss has seen his side extend their unbeaten run to six this week, but he has not been impressed by their last two home displays.

The Blues have collected four Ryman League Division One North points from two successive home matches, drawing 1-1 against Maldon Town on Saturday (report on page 79), before a narrow 1-0 win against Waltham Abbey on Tuesday.

"In both matches we failed to take the chances we created. Had we done so we would have taken six points," said Wilkins.
The Ram Meadow chief was also disappointed with his side's lack of passing and movement off the ball in both games.

"Although getting three points is the priority, the bottom line is that our run will come to an abrupt end if we do not improve our performances," said Wilkins.

And, he emphasised, that has to start tomorrow when the Blues begin a tough three-match run over eight days.

"We are now under a new kind of pressure and we have got to prove that we have what it takes to achieve a play-off place," said Wilkins.

"We have got to be more ruthless and lift our game generally to make sure we continue to move up the table," he added.

Tomorrow, Town travel to Potters Bar Town before Brentwood Town visit Ram Meadow on Tuesday (ko 7.45pm).

Four days later, the Blues face their toughest league test so far when table-toppers Dartford travel to the Suffolk club.

For their opening game, Town travel to North London without left-sided midfielder Lee Reed, who is suffering from damaged ankle ligaments that are likely to keep him sidelined for at least two weeks.

Also still ruled not fit for action is striker Ian Cambridge and defender Sam Nunn – both recovering slowly from knee injuries.

To boost his squad, Wilkins is hoping to recall midfielder Scott Chaplin, who is at present attending Stafford University.

"We need to find a better balance in the side and Scott should be able to redress that," he said.

In midweek, Bury had to battle against a hard-working Waltham Abbey.
They seemed to have made the break through in the 43rd minute when a penalty was awarded following a hand-ball offence.

Unfortunately, the normally reliable Gavin Johnson saw his spot kick halted by the in-form visiting keeper.

The deadlock was broken in the 64th minute when Liam Barrett headed in Lee Smith's cross from the left.

Bury Town FC have appointed Neil Reader, the West Suffolk College Sports Academy manager, as club scout.

Reader's remit is to target talented players to assist the club's management team in strengthening the squad.

The club are seeking a new physio to be available for first-team matches and for further on-going treatments to players.

For further information, telephone assistant manager Trevor Collins on 07766 993432.
