Football - Blues lifted by two league wins in four days
Two league victories in four days have halted a run of four games without a win and helped to lift the gloom hanging over Ram Meadow following a run of cup exits.
The Blues claimed a 2-1 Ryman League Division One North away win against Canvey Island on Saturday, before making it six points following a 3-0 home victory against Waltham Forest on Tuesday.
A fine midweek team display was capped by a hat-trick from striker Sam Reed to take his tally to six for the season so far.
The double delight of league results came after Town had exited four cup competitions – FA Cup, League Cup, FA Trophy and Suffolk Premier Cup – to end a month of disappointing results.
"Although I am still upset about our cup exits, six points helps to make amends," said team manager Richard Wilkins.
"I was particularly pleased with the midweek performance. There was not a weak link on the pitch as we moved the ball around well with one-touch football and sustained the tempo throughout," added Wilkins.
The Ram Meadow chief believes the decision to partner midfielder Danny Cornwell alongside striker Sam Reed has paid dividends.
"Cornwell used to play as a striker when he was at the college so I knew he could do the job," said Wilkins.
"There is no doubt that his strength and influence up front has been vital in the last two games. This could prove to be his best position on the pitch," he added.
Further team changes have resulted in Sam Nunn working well alongside captain Tom Bullard in the centre of the defence. Making up the back four for the last two games is Gavin Johnson, who has resumed guarding the left side while Carl Murkin has impressed on the right following his return from long-term injury.
"The clean sheet on Tuesday was particularly pleasing. The back four dealt with everything very well and looked confident doing their jobs," said Wilkins.
Frontrunner Ian Cambridge continues to struggle with a groin injury as is defender Tom Jeal. However, central defender Darren Coe is ready to return from his injury.
The chief is looking to his side to continue their successsful league run when Aveley visit tomorow (ko 3pm) before the Blues travel to Northwood on Tuesday (ko 7.45pm).
"We need to keep this run going and put together a string of good results. We need to be in the melting pot at Christmas to make sure we are in the play-off places at the end of the season," said Wilkins.
Both Aveley and Northwood are below fourth placed Bury in the league table, but Wilkins is aware that Bury will have to be at their best for both games.
"On paper we should win, but we will have to maintain our good form to make sure we end the week undefeated," said Wilkins.
