Winners of BurySOUND 2007, airtime on Radio Suffolk, gigs at the Athenaeum and the Old Maltings – what's next for young, energetic Indie rock band Student?
The four-piece group, based around Bury St Edmunds, all of whom attend County Upper School, in the town, consist of Toby Mayes, 17, guitar and vocals, Ollie Pearson, 16, guitar, Hannah Sheargold, 15, bass, and Tom James, 16, drums.
The band formed in October 2004 under the name of Yellow Wednesdays and without the presence of bassist Hannah, who was introduced to the line-up within a month of their triumph at the prestigious BurySOUND competition, held at the town's Corn Exchange.
The band's earlier material was inspired by a shared love of the more aggressive sound of bands such as Nirvana and the attitude of a punk rock outfit.
But after a short period of psychedelic rock, the band eventually found its feet and progressed towards the more mature sound of Indie, inspired by likes of chart groups, including Bloc Party and Arctic Monkeys.
Toby said: "We stand for having a good time! I have no idea where we are heading but I'd like to think it's somewhere."
Student play their next gig at the Weeping Willow pub, in Barrow, on December 8. With the hope of broadening their horizons, the band are also looking to book gigs further afield.
Toby said: "The thing I love most about what we're doing is seeing people have a good time at gigs and just the general energy of live music."
